unit 3- Qualitative and Quantitative research
qualitative research can be used to get an understanding of peoples reasons, opinions, and motivations towards something. It helps to understand how to solve a problem or to help develop ideas for quantitative research.
Qualitative Research is a primarily research. It is used to gain an understanding of underlying reasons, opinions, and motivations. Qualitative Research is also used to find trends in opinions and goes finds a way to go deeper into the problem to solve. Qualitative data collection methods vary, some common methods include focus groups, individual interviews, and participation/observations.
Qualitative research also helps focuses on how people feel; what they think and why they make certain choices. For example if you wanted to change your brand in some way you would carry out some form of qualitative research to understand how people will feel towards your new or improved idea.
Qualitative research tends to be transcribed or recorded via audio or video, making it easy to look at peoples responses at anytime. it also allows you to have the ability to explore multiple topics of your choice in depth. also Qualitative research tends to be cheaper to carry out than quantitative research as it ins't needed to have a large amount of people and different methods.
Qualitative research can be done at times that suit you which is good.

quantitive research
Quantitative Research is used to find the problem by way of numerical data or data that can be transformed into useable statistics. It is used to find attitudes, opinions, behaviors, and it also sums up results from a larger sample population.
Quantitative Research uses data to create facts and uncover particular patterns in research that is done. Quantitative data is much more structured than Qualitative data collection methods as information is collected from various forms of surveys for example online surveys, paper surveys, mobile surveys and kiosk surveys, face-to-face interviews, telephone interviews, longitudinal studies, website interceptors, online polls, and systematic observations.
Quantitative market research tends to be more structured and more reliable than qualitative research methods because its more statistical.
Quantitative research can either be paper-based or in the form of a postal survey or computerised like an online survey or telephone call. also with this type of research sample size is everything as larger sample sizes will be needed for the most reliable quantitative data.
Quantitative questionnaires is one of the simplest way to gather numerical data that will show a bigger picture of your work. using numerical values helps to show the most popular answers. Often, the results of questionnaires are presented in a report format with graphs and bar charts, making it easy for the results to be understood.
for my production i think it will be best if i used quantitative research to get a more precise result for my research. also as it is a music video i need to know peoples views and opinions on the questions that i will be asking. i will also need to interact with people so i will need to do face to face interviews.

unit 3- primary and secondary research advantages and disadvantages.
Primary research is designed to meet a person needs. The research is done by you. The research can include focus groups, surveys, interviews, and observations.
questionnaire
the advantage of questionnaires is that specific questions are asked and targeted to specific people this is good because the answers and questions asked will be real. another advantage is that a large amount of information can be collected in a short space of time in a short space this is good because it is time effective for the person collecting the data.
also another advantage is that its cost effective which is good especially if the person collecting the data doesn't have a lot have money. Also its easy to create questionnaires as theres free software like word and publisher etc.
as well as advantages there is also disadvantages is its not known how truthful people are when doing the questionnaires which then may mean that this form of data collection isn't reliable. also people may read into the question differently therefore the may reply based on there own interpretation of the question. also with the questionnaire is that people may skip questions.
also questionnaires don't cant tell the data collector the reason behind the response and its unlikely that with every question it will require the person to write, that taking away the effectivity of a questionnaire.
also it's not known how representative the people are that are answering the questionnaire.
interview
an advantage of interviews is that its face to face so we can get a more in depth data collection and have more understanding. also we can see peoples facial reactions and body language so the interviewer can see what has the best response and the interviewer can see what had the best reaction.
also the interviewer can also explain the questions in more depth so that people can understand clearly what the data collector meant exactly. also because of this the person being interviewed can participate more and add more comment and the interview can run for however long they want.
a disadvantage is that the interviews are more time consuming to do as you have to properly research and you will also have to be ready to answer the participants questions as well. also it may expensive to conduct the interview as it requires a lot of effort. also another disadvantage is that theres a possibility that the interview process can influenced by the biases of the interviewer.
survey
an advantage of surveys is that its cost effective but of course depending on your form of survey. also there is many different ways that surveys can be constructed for example it can be on online, on a phone, mail or telephone so because of this everyone can access this so its quicker for everyone. also numerous questions can be asked about the subject. Also as there's no interviewer there is no time wasted on explaining what the question means to the person.
Another advantage is that it's low costs because more time they only thing that is needed to be paid for is the production of the actual survey. Also it can include a large amount of people at once.
a disadvantage is that it can be time consuming to conduct such surveys. Also another disadvantage there is a possibility that false information can be given from the people answering the questions from this people can also give thoughtless answers.
Even though it's advantage, It's also a disadvantage to not have an interviewer because if the person answering the questions doesn't fully understand the questions the may skip the question or putting something incorrectly.
observation
An advantage of observation is that there is a good explanation of the meaning of the context. This is good to get in depth understanding. It is also a direct way of collecting data. Also it's the simplest form of method ad It does not require much technical knowledge.
a disadvantage is that it can be viewed as to subjective. It can also be seen as time consuming. Also another disadvantage is that there's a lack of reliability. Also there is a lack of access
focus group
An advantage of focus group is they can save time and money compared to individual interviews another advantage is that they can provide a broader range of information. Another advantage is that different and detailed information is given. Also as it's done as a group, ideas can be given and explained in detail.
a disadvantage is that there can be disagreements which take away the main focus from the initial topic. As well with focus groups it can be hard to control depending on the people there and depending on how old they are.
Also with focus groups some people may not say there honest opinion because they feel like they can't be honest about there opinions because they are scared about what people will say. Along with this it may be hard to find people to participate.
forum
the advantage of forums is that u can get information and a variety of opinions because of this you can get in depth information. Another advantage is that it's free. a disadvantage is that anyone can post anything so some of the information may be wrong, made up or fake.
feedback from audience
the advantage of using feedback from a audience is that you get honest opinions. Also it's an audience you could get a range of different people. So this is beneficial because different opinions will be given. a disadvantage is that it can be time consuming.
secondary research
Secondary research is when you use previously completed studies and apply the results to your own situation. It's easy to find this research by using the internet or research journals and is usually free or low cost. The drawback for businesses is that the results are not specific to your business
archives
an advantage of archives research is that the data is already collected and because of that it has low costs and it is also reliable. a disadvantage is that it's time consuming process
libraries
the advantage of libraries is that there is variety of information. Also because there's staff there that have knowledge in there field so they will act as an extra hand and will lead you in the right way. Also libraries are low cost and majority of the time it's free. Also libraries are very accessible.
a disadvantage is that libraries can be time consuming as you have to search for what you're specifically looking for.
ratings
the advantage of ratings is that it's easy to access to information. Also ratings are low cost and majority of the time free. Also ratings save times from having to watch something or read something as you've seen ratings of that production. a disadvantage is that ratings can be unreliable due to as personal opinions are subjective and everyone has different opinions.
circulation figures
the advantage of circulation figures is that you can compare to other media texts and popularity this is good because you're able to see how you can improve or change your research because you've seen examples of others.a disadvantage is that there is unclear representation.
